Who are we?
The Leeds Intra-School Committee (ISC) is a forum for medical students to discuss local issues that could have national implications. We work closely with the
MSRC as local and national issues will often overlap. Our primary concern is to gather information about issues which could have national significance via our year reps. We also organize talks and events.

What are we planning to do this year?

We are hoping to arrange talks on the key issues such as careers, finance, research and publications. We hope to liaise closely with the BMA nationally to keep Leeds medical students up to date on current issues being tackled by the Medical Students Committee (MSC) of the BMA. Our MSC Rep will represent Leeds at this year's Medical Student Conference and compare notes with reps from other medical schools throughout the UK.

What is the Medical Students Committee (MSC)?

The MSC is a committee of elected representatives compiled of BMA student members from all UK medical schools. These representatives are are elected to deal with issues affecting medical students. The MSC is the national forum for debate for medical student members of the BMA. It encourages co-operation between student members and the medical profession. Representatives also sit on subcommittees dealing with issues such as finance, education and welfare of medical students across the UK. The national medical students committee (MSC) meets regularly to discuss issues of national importance. Topics discussed previously include Modernising Medical Careers, the multi-deanery application process, NHS bursaries, permit free training and UKCAT admissions. The MSC is also involved in influencing government, the GMC and other organisations

Role of our MSC Representative
Our MSC Rep is responsible for the national business of the UK MSC. They are the first point of contact between the MSC and students at Leeds and are the key medical student contact for the BMA local office in Leeds. They attend and contribute at all UK MSC meetings, where they discuss issues facing the MSC and get to know Reps from all the other UK medical schools. They attend meetings of the Leeds ISC.
Other work includes:
- Writing a quarterly report on the medico political activities at Leeds for discussion at MSC and distribution at Leeds medical school
- Commenting on consultation documents from key stakeholders
- Ensuring the BMA noticeboard in our medical school is regularly updated

Role of our ISC Chair
Our ISC Chairs is responsible for the local business of the ISC which included establishing the ISC, fitting into the local structures already in place, and chairing meetings of the committee. Our ISC comprises representatives from each year of the course, a graduate medical student and we work closely with MedSoc, the MSRC, and MedSin.
The main roles of the ISC include:
- Involving medical students with the MSC so that it is more representative of the student body
- Providing a forum to get student's views on issues that affect them
- Organise local activities, including lobbying MPs and BMA events

Our ISC Chair liaises closely with the MSC rep in producing quarterly reports on the actions of our medical school/committee. If the MSC rep cannot attend any of the UK MSC meetings, the ISC chair will attend in their place. The ISC chair is a key contact for the BMA regional office in our region and assists in delivery of BMA events.
